LECTURES
Week 1
For the first week, we met in facebook live and had a briefing about this semester's module. We then had a lecture on the 8 typographic systems.
1. Random System : Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.
2. Grid System : A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
3. Transitional System : An informal system of layered banding.
4. Modular System : A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as standard units.
5. Bilateral System : All text is arranged symmetrically on an single axis.
6. Radial System : All elements extend from a point of focus.
7. Axial System : All elements are organized either to the left or right of a single axis.
8. Dilatational System : All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
Week 2
1. Principle of Design Composition
When we think about composition, we think about the dominant principles underpinning design composition, which are emphasis, isolation, repetition, symmetry and asymmetry, alignment, perspective to name a few.
2. The Rule of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds is a photographic guide to composition, it basically suggest that a frame (space) can be divided into 3 columns and 3 rows. The intersecting lines are are used as guide to place the points of interest, within the given space.
3. Typographic System
From the 8 systems the most pragmatic and the most used system is the Grid System (or Raster Systeme), which is derived from the grided compositional structure of Letter Press printing.
4. Other Models/Systems
- Environmental Grid
This system is based on the exploration of an existing structure or numerous structures combined. An extraction of crucial lines both curves and straights are formed. The system/structures were developed around key features of an environment associated to the communicators of the message.
- Form and Movement The principle underpinning this idea is basically sees the grid structure as something fun, so its based on the exploration of the Grid system and where it differ is it is used as multiple number of spread not a single spread (moving frame). The placement of form on a page, over many pages creating movement.

Exercises
Exercise 1
For the first week, we learned about the 8 typographic systems and were asked to create them using a text that was given. We had to use adobe indesign for this task.
We could only use the 9 type families that were given to us last semester, and we could only use one other colour besides black and white.
After sketching my ideas, I started working on it on indesign.
I decided to fix the leading and the fonts on some of them.
This is the result
Exercise 2
We had to choose a picture and try to dissect it to find 5 letterforms. Then we had to refine them while still keeping its characteristics. I decided to choose a picture of a burnt tree that I found on pinterest.
This is the final result:
FEEDBACK
Week 1
General Feedback: We should update our blogs weekly, we should make the body text 8 to 12 pt.
Week 2
General Feedback: We should be careful with our non-objective elements. We should try to not use black as our background. We should not make our fonts too large.
Specific Feedback: I have to fix my leading. I should put a space in between the dash '-' for the time.
Week 3
Specific feedback: Mr Vinod and Mr Shamshul said that they liked my work.
Week 4
General feedback: we can start researching about our final project.
Specific feedback: Mr Vinod said that I should make the letters look more 'flowy' instead of making them looked confined/restricted.
Week 5
Specific feedback: I changed the letters to make it more flowy and Mr Vinod was satisfied with it. I have to update my further reading.REFLECTIONS
Experiences:
Week 1
We started our first online class in Facebook Live. We had a briefing about the module and the lecture as well. We then proceeded with the zoom session. I did not have any trouble with the connection this week so everything was clear.
Week 2
We started our class in Facebook Live again and we had a lecture there. Then we proceeded in zoom to receive feedback for our work. I struggled to come up with more ideas for a few of the type systems.
Week 3
Today the class went well. After the short lecture, we had a zoom session to receive feedback on our work.
Week 4
Today the lecture was presented by our classmates and the presentation went well.
Week 5
We had another feedback session on last week's work that we had revised.
Observations:
Week 1
We got to see other people's work in zoom and learn from what they did so it was a great experience. Everyone had different takes on the task and a lot of people had very creative works.
Week 2
I learned a lot from my classmates' feedbacks this week, as I was struggling with the task myself.
Week 3
It was very interesting to see everyone's work this week. Everyone had very different takes on this task and it was fascinating to see how creative everyone's work was.
Week 4
I saw that everyone was doing very different things and I learned a lot from them.
Week 5
After receiving feedback for this weeks work, some people also showed their revised work for the 2nd exercise.
Findings:
Week 1
I found the online lectures pretty easy to understand.
Week 2
I found the zoom session very effective, and this time we got to hear other people's feedback, so we got to learn from them as well. I had a hard time trying to come up with more ideas this week.
Week 3
It took me some time to figure out what I wanted to use for my letters. I spent quite some time searching for images in Pinterest and ultimately decided on using a picture of a burnt tree. After knowing what image I wanted to use, it was easier for me to find inspiration on the typography.
Week 4
Because we weren't given any specific theme, I took some time to figure out what image I wanted to use. I wanted the image and the phrase to go well together so I spent some time searching for a phrase to go well with the image as well.
Week 5
Because I was done with my exercises, I started working on project 1 this week and had a really hard time figuring out what I wanted to do.
FURTHER READING
Typographic Design: Form and Communication
This was a very interesting and informative read. It starts off with an introduction to typography and its evolution throughout the years. Through the first chapter, we can see how typography got to where it is today and how different it was back then.
I found the chapter on Syntex and Communication very interesting and quite relatable to our typographic systems exercise. It shows how lines of type can be arranged in symmetrical and asymmetrical placements. Symmetrical placement produces a quiet, balanced configuration. Meanwhile, Asymmetrical placement achieves a dynamic division of space on the page. It also talks about visual hierarchy. It is an arrangement of elements in a graduated series, from the most prominent to the least prominent, in an area of typographic space. When elements have similar characteristics, they have equality in the visual hierarchy, but when they have contrasting characteristics, their differences enable them to take dominant and subordinate positions in the composition. When creating a visual hierarchy in typographic space, a designer balances the need for harmony, which unifies a design, with the need for contrast, which lends vitality and emphasis.

For this week we were asked to choose an image and a phrase and combine them together. We were only allowed to use the 10 type families that were given to us.
I decided to choose an image of a girl underwater that I found on Pinterest. I also chose to use the phrase 'flow with it' to compliment the underwater theme.
