INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

Week 1 - Lecture 1: Netnography

For our first lecture, we had a briefing about our module and the tasks that we are expected to do throughout the semester. We also had a lecture about Netnography by Mr. Charles.

These are the lecture slides:

Week 2 - Lecture 2: Guest Lectures

This week's lectures were given by guests Mr Tintoy Chuo and Ms Natasha. Mr Tintoy Chuo talked about Fusion Wayang Kulit and showed us how he combined modern pop culture and traditional wayang kulit. It was very interesting to see how he managed to transform modern characters into wayang kulit, while still maintaining their key features and elements. The second guest was Ms Natasha who talked about batik and textile design. It was fascinating to see how different countries have their own unique batik design and their own distinctive style.

Week 3 - Lecture 3: Guest Lectures

This week, we continued with the guest lectures. This week the lectures were given by Mr. Abdul Munir and Dr. Emelia Ong.

Projects

PROJECT 1: Proposal  (Week 1 - Week 4)

For our first project, we were asked to create a proposal for our project. We were asked to work in groups and decide the theme and also choose a specific culture we wanted to work on.

We were given 5 theme options to choose from:
- preservation
- revival
- sustenance
- assimilation
- trends

My group members and I had a discussion on which cultures we each found interesting. We then decided to choose Greek Culture and decided on 2 specific parts of greek culture we could focus on:
1. Greek Mythology
2. Greek Theatre

Below is my personal research compilation on the topic:

We then had our first meeting with Ms Jinchi where we shared our ideas and also the information that we got during our research.

Feedback: Ms Jinchi said that our topic should be called Greek Culture instead of Greek mythology. Ms Jinchi also proposed that we combine greek mythology and greek theatre for our project. We also need to choose our theme, and the research problem, and look into how we can solve the problem.  Ms Jinchi suggested that our research problem can also start from a brand or a current issue. Our research problem has to be clear. We were also told to change our theme as Ms Jinchi didn't think that revival was a suitable theme for our topic. We also need to think of the core of this subject as it is to communicate across culture and we are looking at this from a non-Greek person.

After our first meeting, we had another discussion and also did more research to choose our research problem. This is our first draft for the proposal:

Feedback:  Ms Jinchi told us that there’s a problem with our research question and objectives, if we look from a design point of view, one of the objectives should be about how to counter the problem in our research as our research problem needs to be more of a design-oriented outcome. Our research objectives are good in a way to make our research more substantial, but it should be more design-related. Maybe the research question could be like ‘What are the ways to inform the generation today and to come that beauty is subjective?’ We also need to know how are we going to approach our theme. Are we going to break the trend? We need to include that in the presentation in order to build a stronger rationale. We can also cite like for example ‘How many people are anorexic or body dysmorphia?’ Our idea of concept must be strong. We need to decide what kind of concept we want to go for.  We can remove research objective 3 since it’s already related to the 1st research objective. Instead of saying misconception, we could say that it creates a skewed way of viewing beauty. We need to remember that this module is about Intercultural Design, we need to know what we want to do with it in a globalized way. We also need to think about that are we using the same platform (social media) to reach back out or other ways.

After receiving feedback, we made changes accordingly and finalized the proposal presentation slides.

Feedback: We were told that our topic is a very interesting topic. But the question is where? to who? what kind of audience are we aiming to? The question of relevance is not there. We need a place of focus or a specific target audience and we need to know who are we aiming this for. The direction of our topic is clear and we just lack the aspect of the target audience. For our research objectives, it has a connection the research questions, but it is quite a lot of information, maybe we can cut down the research objectives to 2. We were also told that research objectives number 2 is not needed, so we only need the first and third.

After receiving feedback, we worked on our slides again, fixed the mistakes according to the feedback and also finished our full research report.

PROJECT 2: Data Collection (Week 4 - Week 6)

For our 2nd project, we were asked to do a data collection based on our topic of research. We decided to do an online survey and visual analysis for the data collection. We asked 10 different questions about the beauty standard in the modern era and social media. As for the visual analysis, we analyzed beauty standards from ancient times to modern times, this includes analyzing ancient greek sculptures, etc. We also watched videos and documentaries on beauty standards and plastic surgeries.

Feedback: For our data collection, we also need to analyze the findings, think about how the findings could help us in finalizing our ideas. We need to summarize what we have gained from the data collection, those data help in our final design outcome and it is for us to find out which one is the best idea for us.

We then compiled all the data that we collected, analyzed the results, and created the conclusion.

PROJECT 3: Final Design Output (Week 6 - Week 7)

For our third project, we came up with different ideas for the final outcome of our project.

Design Ideas:

After discussing, we decided to do social media posts and an ig filter as well. We created a mood board to make sure everyone was on the same page and understood the design idea.

MoodBoard:

We divided the workload and I was tasked to create the illustrations for the posts. I decided to create illustrations that were either based on or referenced Greek myths.

This is the illustartion process:
